Saint Julien (MAGNUM)

Surprisingly good, and filled with truffles, spice, cigar box, earth, black currants and cherry, the wine offers the silky, patina of age along with the earthy, spicy, tobacco laden flavors that can only come with serious bottle age. This is not going to improve, but it's great today.

Chateau Yquem, 1966

Sauternes 1er Grand cru Classe

A good wine. On the nose, there is some orange marmalade, honey and spice character in this wine. Turns quite woody, with lots of caramel.

YQUEM HARVEST NOTES: Weather was mediocre in summer, but improved in autumn. The harvest was very long: 48 days' work out of 55 to bring in a very worthwhile and slightly above average crop in terms of volume. A very rich vintage.

Tuscan wine (Italian Toscana) is Italian wine from the Tuscany region. Located in central Italy along the Tyrrhenian coast, Tuscany is home to some of the world's most notable wine regions. Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are primarily made with Sangiovese grape whereas the Vernaccia grape is the basis of the white Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king. Usually Grenache will dominate the blend (except in the north where Syrah is allowed to be top dog, but these wines are relatively few) and is normally partnered with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre but a further 18 varieties are also permitted! A cheerful example might be light, soft, fruity and easy-drinking, while the finest examples may be full-bodied, concentrated, intense, spicy and ageworthy. But what they all invariably have in common is a fabulous sense of place and lashings of personality and character.

"Definitely fully mature champagne. Amber colour with a rather low key nose initially which opened out to something attractive and lightly sherrified nose that really speaks to the jamon iberico we're served at this dinner at Taillevent organised by François Audouze, his 170th wine dinner. Very deep and rich yet dry. Real lift to this wine but it also has a deep, throat- warming finish. There's a note of cheddar on the nose. Very clean and revitalising. Rich and dense." Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. The 1966 is a top success for that vintage and is fully mature, but will hold for 15 or more years.

Along with Taylor's and Fonseca, Graham's has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1966 is full, vigorous, rich and classy on the palate. Not too sweet. This is a big concentrated, very fine example. Bags of life ahead of it.
